The article presents an overview of functional theory and its application to lexicographic research. This approach has been developed by the researchers from Centre for Lexicography, Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus, Denmark since the 1990s. From a perspective of functional theory, the dictionaries are considered objects for use, they are created and should be created to satisfy the needs of society. This theory takes three factors as the starting points of all issues of theoretical and practical lexicography, including: users, users’ needs, and users’ situations.
