Our article has a purpose of exploring learners’ creative ability through the reflection writing activity. To carry out the study, an action research approach with four steps (planning, acting, observing and reflecting) was applied. The study was conducted within the first 3 weeks of the course (week 2, week 3, week 4). The participants were 32 students studying in the same class of Supplementary Skills at the University of Languages and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. To assess the effectiveness of this approach, we compared the results of the two tests (pre-test and post-test). Besides, we delivered a survey to collect students’ perception towards these activities based on this approach. The results show that learners were able to produce creative writing works after being guided in creative writing. Their creative writings consist of various types including pictures of letters, numbers, people, sun, cup of coffee, and poems. The results also show that the majority of students also affirmed their preference for this approach.
