Teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language in Vietnam has more than 60 years of history. Outside Vietnam, Vietnamese has also become an elective foreign language subject at all education levels in many countries. Therefore, the development of reference materials for Vietnamese teachers is extremely necessary. In this article, the author will firstly introduce the “Error Analysis theory”, and then use this theory to investigate the common errors in pronouncing Vietnamese consonants by Chinese native speakers. This study establishes common Vietnamese consonant pronunciation error patterns of Chinese. It is hoped that these error patterns will help Vietnamese teachers select appropriate teaching strategies to improve the learners’ pronunciation. The results of this study also contribute to designing the Vietnamese textbooks or Vietnamese reference materials for the learners of Vietnamese.
