Grammatical metaphor: An alternative perspective
Keywords:
grammatical metaphor, domain, mapping, cognitive grammar, cognitive linguisticsAbstract
Grammatical metaphor, a concept introduced by Halliday, denotes the occurrence of grammatical-lexical transformations within content that modify the functions of the elements employed to convey that content. Subsequent research has predominantly concentrated on elucidating matters such as linguistic metafunctions, the categorization of grammatical metaphors, and associated subjects. Grammatical metaphor can also be analyzed from an alternative viewpoint based on the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics. From this viewpoint, essential factors encompass conceptual domains, the mechanisms of cross-domain mapping, and associated processes. This study seeks to consolidate essential insights on grammatical metaphor from cognitive linguistics by examining specific grammatical metaphors in Vietnamese. The data under analysis was obtained from the film "Dao, pho va piano" (2024).
