Revisions and Updates on the Compilation of Local Encyclopedias

Abstract

This article focuses on revising and updating the model for compiling local encyclopedias in the context of administrative restructuring in Vietnam after July 1, 2025. Based on a review of international experiences and Vietnam’s tradition of local gazetteers and encyclopedic works, the article clarifies and standardizes key concepts, while distinguishing local encyclopedias from local gazetteers and encyclopedic dictionaries. The article emphasizes the need to update and standardize entries in accordance with new administrative boundaries to ensure accuracy, contemporaneity, and local specificity. It therefore recommends recognizing the compilation of local encyclopedias as an important research direction within collaborative efforts between research institutions and local authorities.
