The elegant feature of the Hanoi Dialect

Abstract

This article is intended to explain the elegance of Hanoians’ accent. We believe that “Hanoi dialect” is not an ordinary dialect like the accent of indigenous people in other localities, it is the result of the process of contact and convergence, so it has outstanding features. Hanoians try to create differences in accent between Hanoi and other dialects. The elegance is the distinctive feature that Hanoians aim for. The previous studies on the Hanoi dialect mainly survey and analyze in terms of phonetics of the Hanoian accent, but this research shows that the expressions in the words, way of making sentences and use of utterances are the basis for Hanoians to practise speech acts to show the elegance in communication.
