Abstract

From the Van Lang dynasty, the Kinh people in the Vietnamese ethnic communities had known how to grow jute, nurse silk, and weave cloth to meet the needs of clothing. The reform in 1744 was a major one in clothing throughout South Vietnam, marking the appearance of tight- fitting clothes. Leg pants have two legs to distinguish them from bottomless pants. The tunic has five bodies, the forerunner of the long-sleeved stand-up collared “Áo dài”. After the Nguyen dynasty reunified the country, this costume gradually became a common costume for both men and women, called Áo dài. Vietnam is currently a country on the way of industrialization - modernization and international integration, so encyclopedias in general and Vietnamese traditional costumes in particular will be an indispensable piece of knowledge. Learning about the Kinh people’s Áo dài will determine the structure of the entry Áo dài of Kinh people in the Volume 35 of the Project of compiling the Encyclopedia of Vietnam
