A contrastive analysis of the graduation system of English and Vietnamese research articles in the light of the appraisal framework

Abstract

This study compares and contrasts the Graduation system of the Result section of English linguistic articles with Vietnamese ones. The study analyses the frequency and studies in- depth the realizations of the Quantification sub- sytem of the Appraisal framework of Martin and White (2005). Results show that both English and Vietnamese articles employ Quantification of Number more frequently than Mass and Extent. English writers deploy more Quantifications in their articles than Vietnamese linguists. It is hoped that the study can be of reference for scientists when they write their research article to improve its persuasion and effectiveness.
