Language of dialogue in the work Cô Tư Hồng by Đào Trinh Nhất

Abstract

Ms. Tư Hồng, the eponymous character in Dao Trinh Nhat’s literary work (in the context of Vietnamese society in the late 19th- and early 20th- century) is an artistic image whose archetype has been controversial. This article focuses on analyzing the character’s attractiveness from the perspective of the dialogue language in the work. Research results show that the language of dialogue contributes to portraying the main character as a woman who is different from the moral standards of traditional women, what makes her different is her proactivity to overcome difficult circumstances, intelligence, resourcefulness, filial piety to parents, and kindness to relatives. Ms. Tu Hong is a unique artistic image, showing a new perspective on people and life of the writer Đào Trinh Nhất in comparison with his contemporaries. The novel Ms. Tu Hong deserves to be a remarkable achievement of Vietnamese literature in the transition period
