Means of grammatical cohesion in scientific texts (A case study of the Journal of Trade Science)

Abstract

There have been many research projects on cohesion in administrative and artistic documents. However, there have been no studies specifically researching grammatical cohesive devices in scientific texts. Based on the conjunction model of Halliday and Hasan (1976), this article conducts a survey and points out the grammatical cohesion used in abstracts of articles in the Journal of Trade Science. The data were collected from 48 different articles in 12 issues of 2021 and 2022. The results of the study have shown that there are four means of grammatical cohesive devices appearing in the surveyed corpus, including: substitutions, ellipsis, references and conjunctions. Based on the analysis of the frequency and usage of these conjunctions, the purpose of the article is to clarify their role in scientific texts.
