Abstract

The study aims at identifying conceptual metaphors on the source domains of weather in Vietnamese and researching the grounds for these metaphors. The study has identified nine source domains to be nine weather conditions (including storm, rain, thunder, flood, wind, fog, cloud, sun and rainbow) that create metaphorical expressions. As classified by weather kinds, two general metaphors are found, including “EXTREME WEATHER IS DIFFICULTIES AND CHALLENGES” and “NICE WEATHER IS OPTIMISM AND HOPES”. The research findings affirm that by nature, conceptual metaphors are a means to reflect human thought and cognitive mechanism and they are established on the two grounds of correlations in experience and perceived structural similarity.
