Comparison of linguistic expressions in nomenclature of flowers in English and Vietnamese

Abstract

Language is a special social phenomenon, in which the lexical units are continuously added into the living language. The naming units are the result of forming new words to convey certain meanings. The naming process is to give the linguistic symbol a concept - expression reflecting certain charateristics of a symbol. This paper aims to identify the linguistic expressions in the nomenclature of flowers in English and Vietnamese, thereby finding out the similarities and differences in selecting the words and phrases in naming flowers based on unique features of the two cultures.
