Abstract

Functional grammar is a theory of language research built on the point of view of language as a communication tool, placing language in the communication context. Overcoming the limitations of traditional grammar, functional grammar studies linguistic units in terms of semantics, grammar, and pragmatics, both independently and interactively with each other, in all aspects, from structure to  function, from static to dynamic. On the basis of applying the theory of three aspects of functional grammar, the article studies the provisional pronouns in order to clarify theoretical issues on the provisional pronouns, thereby, finding out specific expressions of the use of provisional pronouns in the collection of stories Sunken Island by Tran Dang Khoa in particular and Vietnamese in general.
