An investigation into the factors causing demotivation in EFL learning of the learners at a military college in Hanoi

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the factors causing demotivation in EFL learning and to measure the degree of their negative impact on learners in a military college in Hanoi. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed in this study to explore the factors of demotivation and their impact. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data while the qualitative data were analyzed to extract the themes or factors of demotivation. The findings reveal that all six factors were cited by learners as demotivational factors with class environment, course content and text books, and learning materials being the most cited factors. The findings of the study have implications for the teaching and learning of EFL in a military context.
