Maternal kinship terms in Nghệ Tĩnh dialect

Abstract

Based on vocabulary data collected in Nghe Tinh dialect, with the method of synchronous description and historical comparison, the paper will present the results of research on some maternal kinship terms in Nghe Tinh dialect. The purpose of the paper is: (1) Describe the lexical - semantic characteristics of some maternal kinship terms in Nghe Tinh dialect using synchronous documents; (2) Compare and find the etymological origin of the variations based on diachronic documents to explain the cause of their existence. Besides linguistic data, some historical data and ethnic cultural contacts are also used to help clarify issues about the origin of these words.
