Semantic characteristics of the comment - evaluate prediction group in Vietnamese from the perspective of functional grammar

The criteria [± active] and [± intentional] are two important criteria proposed by S.C. Dik for classifying events and predicates (the core of events) from the perspective of functional grammar. However, these criteria have been creatively applied by Vietnamese linguists in the study of events and the structure of events (predicates and participants). Based on this theoretical framework, this paper focuses on clarifying the semantic features of evaluative - commentative predicates in Vietnamese. Accordingly, the content of the paper will include two main parts: 1) An overview of predicates and evaluative-commentative predicates in Vietnamese; and 2) The semantic characteristics of evaluative predicates in Vietnamese in terms of the criteria [± active] and [± intentional]. The research findings of this paper will contribute to clarifying the role of semantic aspects in linguistic research and affirm the superior advantages of functional grammar compared to traditional grammar.
